Be happy with what you have

A calm and an undisturbed mind and heart are the life and health of the body, but envy, jealousy, and wrath are like rottenness of the bones. Proverbs 14: 30

I believe one of the best things we can do for ourselves, is to be happy and content.
Every day adverts all around us try to tease us with new things. Buy a new TV, new phone, new gadget, new car, new clothes, and a bigger house, just get something new. Constantly trying to convince us that what we already have is not good enough and we need to upgrade to the next best thing.

If we follow this line of thinking that the world surrounds us with daily, we can quite easily become discontented and depressed. It can lead to arguments and financial stress in relationships. The idea that more stuff makes us happier is not necessarily true. How many people have so much but are still not happy?

The Bible teaches us that envy, jealousy, and wrath are like rottenness to the bones. That doesn’t sound too health. If we are constantly wanting what others have, then we are never happy with what we already have.

Why do we want something new when what we already have is serving us well?
Is the latest 1000 pound phone really necessary? Rather than spending more and increasing debt could we not save?

A calm and undisturbed mind and heart keeps us in good health. When we’re happy with the simple pleasures of what we have already we can enjoy life. We can be free of society’s pressure. We won’t be disturbed by advertisements and peer pressure. And maybe with the money we are saving, we can help people who are really in need. Which would bring joy to them and to us.
